I am Associate Professor of African Diaspora Studies at the University of Virginia, where I also serve as the Associate Director of the Carter G. Woodson Institute. As an expert on Caribbean literature and history, I have written two books and published nearly two dozen articles on the Haitian Revolution (1791-1804), the most successful slave rebellion in the world, which resulted in Haiti’s independence from France on January 1, 1804.
