The U.S. Air Force has paused its plan to test hypersonic rocket cargo deliveries with Elon Musk’s SpaceX from Johnston Atoll, following backlash from environmental groups and experts. The decision, first reported by Stars and Stripes, came after concerns that the project could severely harm seabird populations on the tiny Pacific island, located about 800 miles southwest of Hawaii.
Johnston Atoll, part of the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument, serves as a critical nesting ground for 14 species of tropical birds. Biologists warned that rocket launches could disrupt breeding and destroy fragile habitats. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service highlighted risks to species such as the great frigatebird, already facing environmental stress.
Although the Air Force initially committed to an environmental assessment, publication of the draft was delayed amid growing opposition. The Air Force is now considering alternative locations for the program. Neither the Air Force nor SpaceX responded to requests for comment.
The suspended initiative aimed to test rapid cargo delivery using commercial rockets, potentially including those developed by SpaceX. The goal was to land rocket-based reentry vehicles capable of transporting up to 100 tons of military supplies anywhere on Earth in under 90 minutes—a potential game-changer for military logistics.
SpaceX has previously faced similar scrutiny. A Starship launch in Boca Chica, Texas, destroyed plover bird nests and eggs, leading to legal action and public criticism.
As the Air Force explores new test sites, the intersection of advanced military technology and environmental conservation remains a critical challenge. The outcome may influence future defense innovations and how they coexist with protected ecosystems.
