Joe Biden is set to be sworn in as the 46th president of the United States in January, and many are celebrating his win over Donald Trump. Leaders from all over the world have since expressed their congratulations to Biden following the news of his victory.
World leaders have weighed in on the election results that saw Biden winning the electoral college. UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Canada Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Ireland Prime Minister Micheal Martin, France President Emmanuel Macron, Ireland health minister Simon Coveney, South Korea President Moon Jae In, and Australia Prime Minister Scott Morrison, among many other leaders, have all wished Biden and Kamala Harris congratulations on their victory. Former presidents Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, and George W. Bush have also expressed their congratulations to Biden and Harris.
“Congratulations, @JoeBiden and @KamalaHarris. Our two countries are close friends, partners, and allies. We share a relationship that is unique on the world stage. I’m really looking forward to working together and building on that with you both,” tweeted Trudeau.
“The Americans have chosen their president. Congratulations @JoeBiden and @KamalaHarris! We have a lot to do to overcome today’s challenges. Let’s work together!” tweeted Macron.
There were other politicians who also thanked Trump and his administration for their cooperation with their respective regions over the years. However, there were some leaders, such as Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who expressed his disinterest in the race between Biden and Trump. The country’s President Hassan Rouhani however, also said that the incoming administration now has the opportunity to clean up the mistakes of the previous one.
Meanwhile, cases of COVID-19 continue to surge in the US, and Biden has made combatting the pandemic a priority for him. Over the weekend, in his first address to the American public as president-elect, Biden confirmed the plans to put together a task force to effectively respond to the ongoing pandemic. The task force will be made up of leading health and science experts and will implement the pandemic response plan. The group will be co-chaired by former surgeon general Vivek Murthy and former FDA commissioner David Kessler and Yale University’s Dr. Marcella Nunez-Smith.
Biden’s announcement of a COVID-19 task force comes before he is to announce who will be part of his White House staff.
