A viral claim circulating on social media falsely attributes a quote to actor Kurt Russell, suggesting he accused President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris of cheating during the 2020 presidential election through mail-in ballots. The claim, viewed hundreds of thousands of times, is entirely fabricated.
The Controversial Claim and Its Spread
On December 2, 2024, a post from the account @TrumpRealDaily on X, formerly Twitter, alleged that Russell had said, “It is now proven, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that Kamala Harris and Joe Biden CHEATED in the 2020 election with mail-in ballots.” The post, which quickly garnered over 250,000 views, encouraged users to weigh in, sparking widespread debate.
The post’s language mirrored other politically charged rumors circulating earlier this year. Translations of similar claims have appeared in French and Spanish, amplifying the misinformation’s reach. Despite the quote being presented as fact, it has no basis in reality.
Russell’s Avoidance of Political Commentary
Russell, known for his roles in films like Escape from New York and Tombstone, has consistently refrained from making political statements. In a 2020 interview with The New York Times, he stated, “You should step away from saying anything so that you can still be seen by the audience in any character.” He further expressed his belief that actors should not feel obligated to leverage their platforms for political discourse.
Newsweek, PolitiFact, and other fact-checking organizations confirmed the inaccuracy of the claim. No evidence links Russell to the quote, and he has been falsely attributed to similar statements in the past, including calls for the deportation of undocumented migrants and endorsements of Donald Trump.
Persistent Misuse of Russell’s Name
The recent claim is part of a broader trend of falsely attributing political commentary to celebrities. Russell has become a frequent target due to his high-profile status and non-political stance. Posts using his name have resurfaced periodically, particularly during election cycles, to stir partisan debates online.
This particular claim is reminiscent of earlier allegations about widespread voter fraud in the 2020 election. While former President Donald Trump and his allies raised concerns about election integrity, numerous investigations, court rulings, and audits found no substantial evidence of fraud that could have altered the outcome. Of the 62 lawsuits filed by Trump’s team, only one resulted in a temporary favorable ruling before being overturned.
Fact-Check: False
Independent fact-checking organizations, including Newsweek and PolitiFact, have labeled the quote as false. Russell has not publicly commented on the matter, and his past statements strongly contradict the notion that he would make such a claim.
Netizens React
Social media users were quick to express their opinions:
- @TruthPatriot87: “If Kurt Russell said it, it must be true! He’s a legend!”
- @FactFinder24: “Do people ever fact-check before spreading nonsense? Kurt Russell has never talked politics.”
- @MAGA4Life: “Fake or not, we all know Biden cheated!”
- @FilmBuff89: “Leave Kurt Russell out of your political drama. He’s an actor, not a pundit.”
- @BlueWave2024: “Desperate misinformation from the same crowd that denies facts!”
- @CinemaFanatic: “Kurt Russell was clear about avoiding politics. Why drag him into this mess?”
