Russia’s top general, Valery Gerasimov, said Wednesday that Moscow’s troops are advancing across multiple fronts in Ukraine, with the fiercest battles unfolding around the strategic hub of Pokrovsk in the Donetsk region. According to the Russian Defence Ministry, Gerasimov described progress not only in Donetsk but also in the Zaporizhzhia and Dnipropetrovsk regions. He claimed Ukrainian forces had shifted elite units to Pokrovsk in an attempt to halt Russian advances, weakening their defense in other areas.
Pokrovsk, a vital logistics center, has faced months of relentless Russian attacks. Gerasimov noted that Russian forces were also making gains near Kupiansk in the Kharkiv region and Yampil further east, despite stiff resistance. He emphasized that Ukraine’s attempts to counterattack have been unsuccessful, accusing Kyiv of incurring heavy losses.
However, Ukrainian officials presented a starkly different account. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy told Sky News this week that Russian offensives had largely failed, though he warned of two new major assaults being planned. He expressed confidence that Ukraine had blunted the last three Russian advances. A Ukrainian commander said his forces repelled an attack near Pokrovsk, while the military blog DeepState reported Ukrainian successes in a nearby settlement.
In Kupiansk, a Ukrainian spokesperson said a failed Russian advance resulted in numerous Russian soldiers being taken prisoner. These reports highlight the contrasting narratives from both sides: Moscow touting steady progress while Kyiv underscores its resilience on the battlefield.
As the war grinds on, Pokrovsk and Kupiansk remain critical flashpoints, symbolizing both Russia’s push to expand control and Ukraine’s determination to resist. With both sides reinforcing positions, the coming weeks could see even heavier clashes in eastern Ukraine.
