It is still drought city for fans anticipating the release of “Sherlock” season 5. With not much updates to go on, some might still be wondering whether 2019 will be the year when the adventures of Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Watson (Martin Freeman) will continue.
Next month, it is going to be two years without substantial news on the production of “Sherlock” season 5. That alone could be a telling factor that the popular BBC One series will not be ready for a 2019 premiere.
It is also important to note that since the first season, a gap of at least a couple of years took place between the finale and the beginning of a new series installment. Add that to the fact that the main actors and showrunners are working on other projects at the moment and it will be easier to assume that “Sherlock” season 5 is unlikely coming out in 2019.
On a more positive note, there are no signs that BBC is planning to cancel the show. Showrunners Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat confirmed as early as 2014 that they have already started writing for “Sherlock” season 5. However, the two have also teamed up and are currently focused on working on a new “Dracula” series. This means that their work with Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman will have to be temporarily put in the back burner.
A more recent piece of evidence that “Sherlock” season 5 is most likely happening came from Speedy’s Cafe owner Chris Georgiou. Avid fans should be familiar with the business name since it is located right under the apartment of Sherlock. “I probably shouldn’t be saying this, but I’ve heard they’ll be coming back for a fifth season,” Georgiou told Time Out.
While the early draft for the series’ future was made four years ago, Moffat and Gatiss already have their hand full with the “Dracula” series. So there is still news on which arcs from the “Sherlock Holmes” novel series are going to be used as materials for “Sherlock” season 5.
