Series producer Shawn Levy revealed that "Stranger Things" Season 5 is ready to resume production as soon as the SAG-AFTRA strike is over. During a recent interview, Levy shared some details about the show's future and touched on the imminent live-stage show called "Stranger Things: The First Shadow."
Work on 'Stranger Things' Season 5 Has Officially Begun
"I can say that we are hoping to start filming as soon as possible. We really need the actor's strike resolved first. The Duffers have been hard at work since the writer strike ended," Levy said to The Wrap. "We're busy on a bunch of fronts because we also have our Stranger Things play opening in London imminently. It's fabulous. It's f–king awesome," he went on.
For starters, "Stranger Things: The First Shadow" will bring back fans to the childhood days of Joyce, Hopper, the Wheelers and other beloved characters when they were the same age as Lucas, Will, Dustin and Mike.
"It has exceeded all our expectations. We're very excited to share that with the world. We are raring to go - our cast, our crew. Everyone not only needs to get back to work because we have many hundreds of crew members who have not been able to make a living since the strikes began, but we will be shooting very shortly after the actor's strike ends," Levy went on.
The show's writing team started scripting "Stranger Things" Season 5 in August 2022, with the title of Episode 1 released as "The Crawl" two months later. Principal photography reportedly started in May 2023. However, the project was pushed back due to the Writers Guild of America strike. Fortunately, the WGA and AMPTP agreed to end the strike on September 25.
Millie Bobby Brown Quits as Eleven Prior to 'Stranger Things' Season 5 Premiere
Meanwhile, CBR reported that Millie Bobby Brown will have her final appearance as Eleven in the upcoming "Stranger Things" Season 5, which the British actress has described as "perfect timing" given her growing list of professional and personal commitments.
"Stranger Things takes up a lot of time to film, and it's preventing me from creating stories that I'm passionate about. So I'm ready to say, 'Thank you, and goodbye,'" Brown explained. The lead star, who has played Eleven in the science fiction series since 2016, has skyrocketed to fame since her casting. Her career highlights include Emmy nominations for her exceptional performances in the show in 2017 and 2018.
Due to its pending production, Netflix has yet to announce the official release date of "Stranger Things" Season 5.
