President-elect Donald Trump plans to declare a national emergency to expand his powers, prioritizing domestic energy production and rolling back climate change policies. The declaration is expected on day one of his second term, which begins later today, according to Bloomberg.
Trump aims to enable more oil and gas development on federal lands while reversing environmental restrictions imposed by the outgoing Biden administration. Speaking at a rally in Washington on Sunday, he reiterated his commitment to energy independence and immigration enforcement.
Reports indicate Trump could sign over 200 executive orders on his first day, a record-breaking number for any U.S. president. Among these actions, a potential national economic emergency may facilitate higher trade tariffs targeting China and other major economies. During his campaign, Trump proposed a 60% tariff on Chinese imports, although recent reports suggest he might adopt a phased approach to optimize bargaining leverage and reduce economic disruption.
The President-elect did not discuss tariffs at Sunday’s rally but emphasized immediate action to boost the energy sector and reduce regulatory barriers. His policies are expected to significantly impact the U.S. economy, energy markets, and global trade relations.
Trump’s assertive start aims to solidify his administration's focus on economic growth, energy independence, and regulatory reform, signaling a sharp departure from the policies of his predecessor.
