In Sydney’s affluent Bondi Junction, early voters said Donald Trump and the global economy influenced their choices ahead of Australia’s May 3 national election. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and the ruling Labor Party are benefiting from rising voter concerns over Trump’s tariffs and volatile diplomacy, despite Albanese avoiding direct criticism of the former U.S. president.
Business owner Ian Atherton expressed a desire to maintain stability, while others said Trump’s unpredictability made them wary of opposition leader Peter Dutton and the conservative Liberal Party. Though Dutton initially led polls, Labor has pulled ahead as voters seek security amid global economic uncertainty.
Former Liberal campaign figures admit Trump’s influence has damaged conservative prospects, with pension fund losses and fear of U.S.-style instability weighing heavily. Labor has emphasized protecting Australia from global shocks, while Dutton struggles to distance himself from Trump without alienating traditional allies.
Polls show strong anti-Trump sentiment, with 68% of Australians viewing him negatively, influencing undecided voters to lean towards Labor. The Trump effect has also bolstered independent "Teal" candidates focused on climate change.
Political analysts note that cost-of-living concerns have merged with fears of global instability, making voters favor the "safety" of Albanese over the "risk" of Dutton. Timing has further hurt conservatives, as Dutton’s controversial comments and alignment with Trump-style rhetoric amplified voter hesitation.
Ultimately, the global turbulence linked to Trump has reshaped Australia's election dynamics, positioning Labor as the safer choice for a nation seeking stability.
