Three high-profile Democratic governors are set to testify before a Republican-led House Oversight Committee on Thursday, amid escalating tensions over President Donald Trump’s intensified immigration crackdown. The governors—New York’s Kathy Hochul, Illinois’ JB Pritzker, and Minnesota’s Tim Walz—face questioning after days of heated protests in downtown Los Angeles following a surge in migrant arrests.
Trump has deployed the National Guard and Marines to California, further fueling the debate. His administration’s immigration policies have become a central political battleground, especially with potential 2028 presidential contenders like California Governor Gavin Newsom and Illinois’ Pritzker voicing opposition. In a recent address, Newsom criticized Trump for prioritizing “theatrics over public safety.”
Pritzker, in his prepared remarks, expressed firm support for enforcing immigration laws. “If they are undocumented, we want them out of Illinois and out of our country,” he stated. However, he also condemned abuses of power and advocated for a path to citizenship for long-standing, law-abiding immigrants.
Minnesota Governor Walz emphasized that his state is not a sanctuary, highlighting cooperation with federal authorities while also respecting local jurisdictions that choose limited compliance. Walz, who ran for vice president in 2024, reinforced Minnesota’s legal adherence while balancing political sensitivities.
Trump’s hardline stance is earning him strong voter support on immigration, according to recent Reuters/Ipsos polls, outpacing his approval in other policy areas.
As the 2028 presidential race looms, immigration remains a defining issue. With Trump doubling down on enforcement and Democrats divided on how best to respond, Thursday’s hearing may set the tone for the next phase of the national debate. The political stakes are high as both parties look to define their positions on one of America’s most polarizing issues.
