Ukraine’s top military commander, Oleksandr Syrskyi, confirmed on Saturday that Ukrainian forces are continuing to defend the embattled eastern city of Pokrovsk, despite Russia claiming to have nearly encircled it after more than a year of fierce fighting. Pokrovsk, known as the “gateway to Donetsk,” has been a key target in Moscow’s push to seize full control of the Donetsk region, which Russia claims to have annexed. Once home to around 70,000 residents, the city has been devastated and largely depopulated by continuous bombardment.

Capturing Pokrovsk would mark Russia’s most significant territorial gain since taking Avdiivka in early 2024, following one of the bloodiest battles of the war. Since then, Russian forces have made incremental advances across the 1,000-kilometer front line, with both sides suffering massive casualties. While Moscow boasts of steady progress, Kyiv maintains that front-line changes remain minimal and that Ukrainian troops continue to hold strategic positions.

Syrskyi stated, “We are holding Pokrovsk. A comprehensive operation to destroy and dislodge enemy forces from the city is ongoing.” Independent analysts from Deepstate, which tracks front-line developments using open-source intelligence, report that Russian troops currently control a small southern sector of Pokrovsk, while much of the city remains contested. Ukrainian forces are reportedly conducting counteroffensives to eliminate infiltrating Russian units.

Russia’s Defence Ministry and its Zvezda media outlet have claimed Ukrainian soldiers are surrendering, releasing unverified footage of alleged captives. Meanwhile, Kyiv denied reports that its special forces, recently deployed by helicopter into Pokrovsk, were eliminated by Russian troops. The Ukrainian military described the situation as “difficult and dynamic,” but said it had improved its tactical positions in several city sectors.

Pokrovsk’s fate could prove decisive in the broader battle for Donbas, where Ukraine continues to hold roughly 10% of the region—about 5,000 square kilometers in western Donetsk.
