New York authorities are closing in on the suspect behind the killing of UnitedHealth executive Brian Thompson. The targeted attack has sparked an intense interstate manhunt after the suspect fled NYC by bus.
Authorities Close In on Suspect in UnitedHealth CEO’s Murder
According to New York City Mayor Eric Adams, who was mentioned on Saturday by the New York Post, authorities have identified and are closing in on the guy accused of killing UnitedHealth CEO Brian Thompson.
Adams informed reporters at a Harlem Police Athletic League holiday party, "The net is tightening," as reported by the Post. Not naming the culprit was his decision.
Near 6:45 a.m., Thompson, who had just assumed the role of CEO for UnitedHealth's insurance division, was shot in the back. Thompson is 50 years old. on Wednesday around 1145 GMT, in what authorities said was a premeditated assault by a masked man.
Tragically, a murder took place at the Sixth Avenue Hilton hotel within minutes prior to the company's annual investor conference.
Massive Manhunt for Suspect After Escape Into Central Park
The shooter, who authorities claimed rode into Central Park on an electric bike after escaping on foot in a balaclava, gray backpack, and hooded jacket, was the subject of a huge manhunt following the incident.
The Post cited Adams as adding that the suspect's identity is being withheld by the police at this time so that he does not have any benefit.
"We don’t want to release that now," the mayor stated. “If you do, you are basically giving a tip to the person we are seeking and we do not want to give him an upper hand at all. Let him continue to believe he can hide behind the mask."
Then he went on to say, "We revealed his face," making reference to the photographs and videos taken by security cameras following the murder. "We’re going to reveal who he is and we’re going to bring him to justice."
Video Links Suspect to Port Authority Bus Terminal
After footage of the suspect getting into a cab and heading to a bus station surfaced, the New York police announced on Friday that they believed the man had departed the city.
"We have video of him entering the Port Authority Bus Terminal. We don't have any video of him exiting so we believe he may have gotten on a bus," stated Joseph Kenny, chief of detectives for the New York Police Department, in an interview with CNN. "Those buses are interstate buses. That's why we believe he may have left New York City."
According to Investing.com, the shooter seemed to wait for Thompson while disregarding other passersby on film, leading authorities to believe the attack was planned and intentional. We do not yet know what motivated the shooter.
Security Footage Highlights Targeted Nature of the Murder
The assailant positioned behind Thompson raised his pistol and opened fire, as shown on security footage. The married father of two, Thompson, was shot in the back and leg and later declared dead at a hospital.
