U.S. regulators have approved Venture Global LNG's request to increase the export capacity of its Plaquemines, Louisiana, LNG plant from 24 million metric tons to 27.2 million metric tons per year. The 13% expansion strengthens the United States’ position as the world’s top LNG exporter.
Venture Global, which recently went public, has become one of the most valuable U.S. LNG companies. Its strategy includes extended commissioning periods to maximize profits by selling LNG on the spot market at higher prices than long-term contracts. The Plaquemines facility, currently in commissioning, is expected to remain in this phase for nearly three years across both phases 1 and 2. Long-term customers will start receiving shipments in 2026 and 2027.
Regulators acknowledged the increased production would contribute to greenhouse gas emissions but deemed the environmental impact acceptable. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) stated that while the project would add to global emissions, they could not determine the significance of its impact.
Venture Global’s expansion reflects the broader trend of growing U.S. energy exports, aligning with national policies promoting energy independence and global competitiveness.
