Grecia Quiroz, widow of assassinated Uruapan Mayor Carlos Manzo, has officially taken over her late husband’s position, pledging to continue his relentless fight against organized crime in Michoacan, Mexico. Quiroz was unanimously approved by the state congress and sworn in as mayor of Uruapan—Mexico’s avocado capital—just days after Manzo was gunned down during Day of the Dead celebrations.
“Today I come with a broken heart because they took my life partner, the father of my children, but also with the courage and fortitude with which he rose to fight,” Quiroz declared during the ceremony, holding her husband’s hat as a symbol of his legacy. “They will not silence me. I will follow in his footsteps.”
Manzo, 40, was fatally shot by a hooded gunman during a candlelight festival last Saturday, moments after giving a speech while carrying his young son dressed as a skeleton. The outspoken mayor had frequently criticized the federal government’s inaction against powerful drug cartels controlling the region’s lucrative avocado and lime industries.
Carlos Bautista, leader of the Independent Hat Movement—of which Manzo was a member—confirmed that Quiroz will be protected by at least 14 security agents. “This is something that should never happen again,” Bautista said, noting that several of Manzo’s allies have also received death threats.
Michoacan remains one of Mexico’s most violent states, with rampant cartel-linked extortion, kidnappings, and murders. The recent killing of agricultural leader Bernardo Bravo in October underscored the region’s deep insecurity.
Authorities have arrested two suspects connected to Manzo’s murder and vowed to continue the investigation. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum met personally with Quiroz and Manzo’s brother, stating, “They are right to demand justice, and the investigation must go to the end.”
