Many will note the differences between outgoing first lady Melania Trump and her predecessor Michelle Obama. Melania’s husband, Donald Trump, notes one particular difference as he recently ranted about his wife not getting featured in publications.
Trump made his thoughts on the fashion publications known on Christmas Day. Trump retweeted a post from Breitbart News that described fashion publications as “elitist snobs” that did not feature “the most elegant first lady in American History” on its covers throughout the presidency. The post also included the link to an article reviewing Melania’s sartorial choices when she was photographed departing the White House to spend the Christmas holiday at the Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.
“The greatest of all time. Fake news!” tweeted Trump with the post.
However, prior to becoming the first lady, Melania’s days as a former model already featured her on covers of fashion publications, including Vogue magazine. This was after she married Trump in 2005. Throughout the eight years of the Obama presidency, Michelle has been featured in 12 magazine covers.
Trump’s tweet was considerably met with backlash, as this comes at a time where the need for a COVID-19 relief bill is dire. The pandemic has infected millions in the United States, with more than 300,000 have died from the disease. Many users questioned Trump’s priorities, pointing out the surge in the death toll from COVID-19, including the cyber attack on government agencies by Russia and its bounties on US soldiers in Afghanistan. There were other users that pointed out the cost of Melania’s shoes that were featured in the Breitbart News post amounting to the same as the COVID checks he is pushing Congress to pass that were around $2,000.
Previously, the couple posed in matching tuxedos for their final White House Christmas portrait. Taken by official White House photographer Andrea Hanks, Melania and Donald were photographed at the festively decorated grand staircase of the presidential estate. The first lady has shared the photo from her official FLOTUS account, wishing everyone a happy holiday ahead even as many are spending it at home and are unable to travel due to financial constraints and the ongoing pandemic.
