US President Joe Biden has led the efforts to counter Vladimir Putin’s invasion into Ukraine through sanctions and sending arms to Ukraine. The White House is currently considering a presidential visit to Europe for Biden in another effort to shore up more support.
The White House is considering a presidential visit to Europe for Biden in the coming weeks. A possible visit by Biden could further boost alliances in Europe as Putin continues to wage war against Ukraine. Should the US leader visit Europe, he is likely going to be in Brussels, the capital of the European Union and where the NATO headquarters is located.
The US leader has led efforts to rally together the G7 and NATO countries in imposing sanctions on Russia and sending arms to Ukraine since the unprovoked invasion. NATO has already increased its forces along the eastern flank while providing arms and military equipment to Ukraine. Ukraine is not a NATO member country but has a partner status with the alliance.
Biden has also admitted spending hours on the phone and speaking to US allies all over the world. The conversations have since led to a package of economic sanctions not only targeting Russia’s economy but also its wealthiest and their family members.
Despite all the efforts in sending arms and imposing sanctions, as the conflict continues, the West is still facing pressure to do more to help Ukraine and get Moscow to cease the invasion.
Biden has been reluctant in imposing a “no-fly zone” over Ukraine as well as sending offensive weapons. This is as the administration has raised concerns that by doing so if Russia sees these actions by the US as the cause of Russian casualties, the conflict would escalate into a world war.
In other related news, Biden is set to meet with Ireland’s Taoiseach Michel Martin at the White House for the annual St. Patrick’s Day visit. This would be Martin’s first meeting with Biden as Taoiseach as he could not travel to Washington last year due to the ongoing pandemic.
Both leaders are expected to discuss relations between the two countries, along with the conflict in Ukraine and the support for the Good Friday Agreement.
