Former vice president Joe Biden is the presumptive Democratic nominee, and he has received several major endorsements over the past week. This week is no different as he received the endorsement of the United Auto Workers union.
As reported by CNBC, the United Auto Workers union officially announced their endorsement of Biden. The union, representing over 400,000 workers, explained that their reason for endorsing the former vice president because of his experience during the 2009 auto bailout under the Obama administration and also cited “anti-worker federal employees” of the Trump administration. UAW President Rory Gamble said in a statement, “In these dangerous and difficult times, the country needs a president who will demonstrate clear, stable leadership, less partisan acrimony, and more rights and balance to the rights and protections of working Americans.”
The UAW usually endorses Democratic presidential candidates, having endorsed Hillary Clinton back in 2016 as well as former President Barack Obama during his two terms in 2008 and 2012.
The Trump campaign then released a statement in response to the UAW’s endorsement of Biden. The campaign said that even though Biden gained the support of union leaders, it was under the Trump administration that brought in more jobs and set higher wages. They even noted that Biden supported bringing jobs overseas as well as having voted for NAFTA, stressing the “America First” policy that Donald Trump has often touted during his rallies.
That is not to say the workers have forgotten as some blue-collar workers have voted for Trump during the 2016 elections despite the UAW endorsing Clinton at the time.
Aside from receiving support from the UAW, the Democrats are now pushing Biden to release his shortlist of people to place in the Supreme Court and use his experience as a public defender to run on the judiciary. A number of activists and lawyers have also stated that Biden should also maintain the liberal legacy of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
According to progressives, should Biden lose the November elections, the current 5-4 Conservative majority would turn into a possible 7-2 majority should Ginsburg or even Stephe Breyer, choose to retire or face more health problems.
