U.S. President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy will serve as the interim administrator of NASA. The surprise move comes as the administration seeks to strengthen America’s leadership in space exploration and accelerate upcoming missions under the Artemis program.
Duffy, a longtime Trump ally and former congressman, is expected to assume the interim role immediately. The White House has yet to confirm whether a permanent nominee for NASA administrator will be announced soon. Current NASA leadership had been operating without a confirmed head since the departure of the previous administrator earlier this year.
The appointment signals the Trump administration’s renewed focus on advancing U.S. space dominance, a key theme in recent speeches by the president. Trump has repeatedly emphasized the need to fast-track missions to the Moon and Mars, as well as expand public-private partnerships with companies like SpaceX and Blue Origin.
Duffy’s transportation background and political alignment with Trump are seen as factors in the decision. Critics, however, have raised concerns about his lack of aerospace experience.
