Local authorities in Ukraine have ordered the evacuation of families from dozens of villages near the embattled northeastern city of Kupiansk as Russian forces intensify their offensive in the region. Officials cited a “worsening security situation” as the reason for the evacuation, which affects areas that have endured relentless shelling and attacks in recent months.
Oleh Syniehubov, governor of the Kharkiv region, announced via Telegram that 409 families, including 601 children, were instructed to leave 27 localities surrounding Kupiansk. Later, another regional official told public broadcaster Suspilne that the evacuation list had expanded to 40 villages, signaling the growing threat to civilians as the front line shifts.
Kupiansk, a strategically important city in northeastern Ukraine, has become a focal point of fierce fighting. Russian troops initially seized the city in the early stages of the February 2022 invasion, but Ukrainian forces reclaimed it later that same year. However, Moscow has renewed its offensive, seeking to push westward through central and eastern Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy confirmed last week that Ukrainian forces are holding key defensive positions, including around Kupiansk. He also highlighted a counteroffensive operation underway near the town of Dobropillia in southern Ukraine, emphasizing the country’s determination to resist Russian advances.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared that Russia currently holds a strategic advantage along the 1,200-kilometer (775-mile) front line. Ukraine’s top military commander, Oleksander Syrskyi, acknowledged the scale of the battle but reaffirmed Kyiv’s commitment to protecting civilians and maintaining control of critical areas.
The evacuation near Kupiansk underscores the escalating humanitarian crisis and the ongoing struggle for control in eastern Ukraine, where fighting continues to devastate local communities and force thousands from their homes.
